Uh, btw, I'm focussing on sample cd's of the electronic-music genre, so no classic-music sample cd's here :-(

If you’re making any kind if edge music, and if you own a sampler, Distorted Reality is a CD that you must hear. From shredded beats to unidentifiable hysteria, this disc has it nailed. We auditioned the Roland CD-ROM - not surprisingly the first to be pressed, since sound developer Eric Pershing has long been a Roland sample guru. The audio CD, although crammed with 74 minutes of tracking, has less material than the CD-ROM; the pad sounds in particular were left off. But you can buy audio version and later upgrade to the CD-ROM for a straight price differential, making it doubly good deal...

....The disc has far more to offer than we have space to discuss in this review - sliced-off hits suitable for raves, panicky echoing crowd noises, a very tasty bowed-metal sample, throbbing electronic mandolins, sandworms in hyperspace, pennywhistles from the ninth dimension, and things that fly by so fast you can’t tell what they are. Possibly not a good source, in other words, for country producers in search of a perfectly miked Martin accoustic. For the progessively minded, it’s a feast."

Every samplist should have at least one monster collection of drum hits in their armoury, and so it is that we turn our attention to Dance Mega Drum Kits, the third instalment in this successful series with over 5000 drum samples packed onto one CD.
More than 98 tracks are 569 already-to-play kits; even more so if you´ve got an Akai sampler, equating to about five kits per track. There are drumkits for all contemporary dance styles; taking in hip hop, funk, house, disco, techno, 2-step, pop, real drum kits, even 1970s and 1980s kits for those who are that way inclined.
Now although that might be the case, irritatingly the CD listing doesn´t say which is which, choosing to list the kits by number. So track one contains kits 001-008, while
track 42 contains kits 225-230 and so on... help! This obviously doesn´t detract for the audio side, but makes sifting through the kits hit or miss, to say the least.
And let´ts face it, although all the drum sounds you´ll probably ever need are on here, sifting through 5000+ sounds is hardly inspirational. However, within the 569 kits
are 1500 kick drums, 1500 snares, rim shots and claps, 1000 hi-hats and cymbals and more than 1000 percussion sounds, making this collection a solid, if unwieldy, tome for the music librarians among us.
